Freesias are colourful perenial bulbs which are prized for their citrus-like fragrance as well as their beautiful spring displays. Freesias originate from Africa and are named in honour of German physician Dr. Friedrich Freese who studied the plants of South Africa. Freesias come in a myriad of colours and also come in unscented and 'giant' varities.
Freesias grow well in areas of full sun and can naturalise to gardens when conditions are right. They can be grown as pot plants, but many gardeners opt to use them in large beds or as borders in their gardens. Like other bulbs, they must be planted in soil that has good drainage. They can be watered when in bloom but at the end of season should be left to dry down.
